Subject: Corrections: Take
care to deal with the Onions....
Dear all,
I think I might have forwarded
you an e-mail regarding leftover onions, but I just found out that it actually
is an Urban Myth - usually a mix of truth, half-truths, superstition, folklore,
and falsehoods. :-(
Jimmy, who works
for USDA just made the following corrections:
Unfortunately,
uncut onions in your home or workplace
WON'T protect you from infectious diseases such as flu viruses:

Staying healthy by avoiding large crowds especially
in enclosed spaces, eating healthy foods especially colorful fruits and vegetables,
staying hydrated, getting enough sleep, avoiding stress, and frequent hand-washing
is a good start though.
Also, any leftover food will eventually have bacteria, yeast, and mold growth
to make it spoiled. Cut
onions aren't necessarily more "poisonous" than other food.

A recent analysis of CDC's foodborne outbreak
data showed that
leafy greens like spinach and lettuce have actually
caused the most foodborne outbreaks
in the U.S.. Other foods that have caused the most foodborne outbreaks
include eggs, seafood, and cheese.

Take care everyone, and safe
eating!
